WORLD SUPER LEAGUE

·      ICC has announced world super league for odi cricket….

After the World Test Championship, ICC has announced World Super League for ODI to make it more interesting as was the case with Test Cricket. On Monday ICC announced the Super League which would kick start in the upcoming England v/s Ireland ODI series. Originally it was supposed to start from May 2020 but due the corona virus pandemic it was delayed and now it would be underway.

World Super League will be the main criteria for the qualification for 2023 Cricket World Cup which would be played in India. The total of 13 teams to compete in the League i.e. 12 full member nations with Netherland. The top 7 teams along with India [being the host nation] would attain direct qualification to the main round of 2023 Cricket World Cup, while the bottom five teams would have to compete in Cricket World Cup Qualifiers just before the main round along with associate teams for the final two positions.

Over the course of the league, each team would play four home and four away ODI series. The series will be a three-match series although the teams are free to play more matches but the extra matches results won’t be considered for league points. Every win will be awarded 10 league points, 5 points for the tie or no result and no points will be awarded for the loss.

The ODI series between England and Ireland would be the first series of the league. The exact details for which teams will compete to which team is not yet sure because the FTP of each nation has been affected due to corona virus pandemic. Awarding points in bilateral series would make each bilateral competition really interesting, but there are some drawbacks here as well as in World Test Championship which needs to be look into by the ICC.

Another spice which has been added to the World Super League is that third umpires will call the no-balls instead of on-field umpires. This technology was tested earlier in 2019, in the series between India and Windies and proved quite successful, this will make the League much more interesting.
